Day 1
Reception & Pre-Tour Briefing
Upon your arrival at the airport or bus station, our team will welcome you and transfer you to the Monte Amazonico Lodge and Carlos Expeditions main office. Here, we will complete your registration and hold a final pre-tour briefing before setting off on our adventure. Travel tip: if you are carrying large luggage, we kindly suggest repacking to store what you do not need and bringing only the essentials for a more comfortable stay in the jungle.

Land & River Journey to the Lodge
Next, we will embark on an exciting 2-hour 4×4 overland trip through the changing landscape until we reach the banks of the Tambopata River. At the riverbank, we will board a motorized boat that will take us directly to the charming Hacienda Tambopata Lodge. Upon arrival, you will receive a warm welcome followed by a delicious breakfast or lunch, depending on your arrival time.
Next, we will embark on an exciting 2-hour 4×4 overland trip through the changing landscape until we reach the banks of the Tambopata River. Afternoon Introductory Hike
In the afternoon, we will venture into the dense tropical forest for a guided introductory hike. This initial exploration offers a wonderful opportunity to spot fascinating local wildlife in their natural habitat, including amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and extraordinary insects that showcase the unique biodiversity of the Amazon.

Day 2
Dawn Journey & Wildlife Spotting (4:30 a.m.)
We will wake up early to embark on a scenic 1.5-hour boat ride to the Chuncho Clay Lick, the largest macaw clay lick in the world. As we navigate the river at dawn, we will have an incredible opportunity to spot wildlife along the banks, such as tapirs and capibaras (the world’s largest rodents). With a bit of luck, we might even encounter South America’s most magnificent feline: the jaguar. Many of our guests have witnessed these beautiful mammals and captured stunning photographic proof. A camping-style breakfast will be served during the excursion. [1, 2, 3]

We will set up our camp chairs to witness one of the most stunning natural avian spectacles on Earth. Following the parrots, the three most colorful macaw species in the Americas arrive: the red-and-green, along with the blue-and-yellow macaws. They gather to consume the essential clay that aids their daily digestion and eliminates toxins. On a morning of high activity, you will see hundreds of these marvelous birds flying overhead—truly a lifetime experience. [1]

After the activity, our boat will take us back toward Puerto Maldonado to connect with the main port. From there, we will take a 1-hour boat ride to our next lodge, where you will be welcomed with a refreshing regional fruit juice before checking in. After enjoying a delicious lunch, we will cross the Madre de Dios River by boat to visit the famous “Monkey Island.” This natural sanctuary is home to a wide variety of primates, including the brown capuchin, squirrel monkey, and saddle-back tamarin. You will be able to observe them interacting freely in their environment before navigating back to the lodge.

Day 3
Paddle Canoe Safari at Sandoval Lake
Following breakfast, we will embark on a 3-kilometer hike through the dense tropical rainforest toward the majestic Sandoval Lake, one of the largest and most beautiful bodies of water within the Tambopata National Reserve. Renowned as a natural habitat for piranhas, we will explore the lake aboard a paddle canoe. This peaceful approach allows us to navigate quietly and spot a stunning variety of birds and primates in their natural environment, including the exotic hoatzin (shansho), cormorants, jacanas, rufescent tiger herons, vultures, as well as howler monkeys, brown capuchins, tamarins, and sloths. With a bit of luck, we might witness a family of giant river otters—an endangered species that can grow up to two meters long. Afterward, we will return to the lodge to enjoy a traditional regional lunch. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Treetop Adventure (5:30 a.m.)
We will start the morning early for an unforgettable experience in the heart of the rainforest. We will take a short walk to our elevated trail and suspension bridge system, suspended about 30 meters (100 feet) high. This impressive canopy walkway allows us to contemplate nature from a completely different perspective, offering a privileged panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River. From the observation platforms, you will have the perfect opportunity to spot majestic bird species that inhabit the treetops, such as toucans, macaws, tanagers, and orioles. Without a doubt, this will be a wonderful experience to wrap up your stay.
