Itinerary
Day 1.- CUSCO - PAUCARTAMBO - CLOUD FOREST - PILCOPATA
We begin our tour with a pick-up from your hotel early in the morning, between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., aboard our comfortable private bus. During the journey, we will explore the impressive Funerary Towers, or Chullpas, of Ninamarca, located at 3,750 meters above sea level, followed by a brief stop in Paucartambo, a picturesque folkloric town known for its colonial bridge. Next, we will head to the highlands of Paucartambo, specifically to the Acjanaco sector, at an altitude of 4,000 meters above sea level. This point marks the beginning of Manu National Park.
We will descend through the mysterious cloud forest, home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including beautiful orchids, heliconias, and primitive ferns. During the hike, you will have the opportunity to witness the fascinating mating ritual of the Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruviana). In addition, there is a possibility of spotting birds such as Trogons (Trogon sp.), Quetzals, and if we are lucky, even the elusive Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus). In the afternoon, we’ll arrive at the picturesque village of Pilcopata, located 550 meters above sea level, where our cozy, traditional lodge is located. Set apart from the town, this lodge offers private bathrooms and showers to ensure a comfortable stay.
Day 2.-PILCOPATA - ATALAYA - MACHUWASI - PAITITI LODGE
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we will continue our journey by bus for 45 minutes until we reach Atalaya, located at an altitude of 490 meters above sea level. There we will embark on a boat for 30 minutes to reach the Paititi Lodge, where we will spend the night in a typical environment with private bathrooms and showers. During the boat ride, we will have the opportunity to observe a variety of animals in their natural environment. After a satisfying lunch, in the afternoon we will head by boat to Cocha Machuwasi. We will take a ride on a typical catamaran of the area to observe a great diversity of birds, such as the Shansho (Ophisthocomus hoatzin), as well as monkeys, reptiles, dwarf caimans and insects. We may be lucky enough to spot some capybaras (Hydrochaerus hydrochaeris). In the evening, we will have the option to participate in an exciting night trekking. We will spend the night at the hostel, where we will have private bathrooms and showers for a comfortable and peaceful stay.
Day 3.-PAITITI LODGE - PARROTS LICK - HOT WATERS AND WATERFALLS OF THE SHINTUYA COMMUNITY
Very early, we will embark on a 25-minute boat ride to the parrot clay lick, a place where we will be able to observe between 3 and 4 species of parrots and small macaws. Here, we will also have the opportunity to spot a wide variety of birds, monkeys, reptiles, dwarf caimans, insects, groups of turtles and perhaps some capybaras (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris). We will continue our boat trip along the upper Madre de Dios River for another 1 hour and 45 minutes, during which we will be able to observe numerous species of birds such as different types of herons, parrots, orioles, garrapateros and vultures. We will pass through several settler communities that live along the river, where we will have the opportunity to take a walk until we reach the wonderful waterfall. After a well-deserved rest, we will head downriver until we reach our lodge. We will enjoy dinner and spend the night at the hostel, where we will have bathrooms and showers available for a comfortable and pleasant stay.
Day 4.- PAITITI - ATALAYA - CUSCO
After enjoying our delicious breakfast, it is unfortunately time to say goodbye to the Paititi hostel and begin our return by boat to the port of Atalaya. There, the bus will be waiting for us to take us back to Cusco, crossing once again the enigmatic cloud forest on our way to the imperial city. We estimate to arrive in Cusco approximately between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m., thus completing our return trip from the Amazon.
