Itinerary
Day 1
Welcome and Trip Preparation
Upon arrival at the airport or bus station, our team will transfer you to the Monte Amazónico Lodge and Carlos Expeditions office for a final pre-tour briefing. If you have bulky luggage, we suggest repacking to bring only the essentials to the rainforest; the rest of your belongings can be securely stored at our facilities.
Overland 4×4 Journey and Boat Ride on the Tambopata River
Next, we will take a 4×4 land transfer of approximately two hours to the banks of the Tambopata River. From there, we will board a motorized boat to our Monte Amazónico – Tambopata lodge, where you will enjoy a welcome breakfast or lunch, depending on your arrival time.
First Introductory Rainforest Walk
In the afternoon, you will embark on an introductory rainforest walk. This will be your first opportunity to deep dive into the ecosystem and observe the incredible local wildlife in its natural habitat, including fascinating mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects.
Day 2
Early River Safari and Wildlife Spotting
We will wake up very early, at 4:30 a.m., to embark on a fascinating boat journey to the world’s largest macaw clay lick: “Chuncho.” During this 1.5-hour cruise, we will look for iconic species along the riverbanks, including capybaras (the world’s largest rodents), tapirs, and even the jaguar, South America’s most majestic feline. Many of our guests capture incredible photo evidence of these beautiful mammals.
The Natural Spectacle at Chuncho Clay Lick
Upon arrival, you will witness a unique natural phenomenon: hundreds of parrots from up to 11 different species gathering on the riverside clay wall. We will settle into our seats to watch one of the world’s most beautiful avian spectacles. Soon, they are joined by three of America’s most colorful macaw species: red-and-green, blue-and-yellow, and scarlet macaws. These birds gather to eat the nutrient-rich clay, which is essential to their daily diet for neutralizing toxins. On an active day, you will see hundreds of them soaring overhead—a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Return to the Lodge, Breakfast, and Relaxation
After the spectacle, we will head back to the lodge for a fresh breakfast and a well-deserved period of rest before our next activities.
Botanical Garden Exploration and Lunch
Later, accompanied by our expert guide, we will take a walk through the botanical garden. Here, you will discover various species of fruit, timber, and medicinal plants native to the Amazon region. Afterward, we will gather for lunch.
Kayak Adventure on the Tambopata River
In the afternoon, we will go kayaking on the Tambopata River. Gliding silently along the water will provide an excellent vantage point to spot the larger wildlife of the Tambopata National Reserve without disturbing them.
Evening at Leisure or Optional Night Walk
As night falls, you will have the evening free to unwind at the lodge. Alternatively, you can choose to join an optional night walk to explore the fascinating world of the forest’s nocturnal creatures.
Day 3
Boat Transfer to the Lodge and Amazonian Welcome
After a hearty breakfast, we will cruise back to Puerto Maldonado to transfer to the main port. There, we will board a boat for a scenic one-hour ride to our next lodge. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed with a refreshing glass of local tropical fruit juice before checking into your accommodation.
Botanical Walk and Wildlife Spotting in Tambopata
Following a brief rest, you will embark on a two-hour hike through the dense rainforest accompanied by an expert guide. As we walk the interpretive trails, you will marvel at majestic trees over five hundred years old and look for wildlife such as toucans, oroles, parrots, monkeys, snakes, and butterflies. This excursion immerses you in the magic of the Tambopata National Reserve, a protected area spanning 278,000 hectares.
Monkey Island Exploration
After lunch, we will cross the Madre de Dios River by boat to visit the famous “Monkey Island.” This unique sanctuary is home to various wild monkey species, including the brown capuchin, the squirrel monkey, and the saddle-back tamarin. After observing them in their habitat, we will return to the lodge.
Night Safari for Caimans and Capybaras
At dusk, we will head out for a thrilling night safari to spot caimans. Using flashlights, we will scan the sandbanks of the Madre de Dios River to locate white caimans and potentially spot capybaras along the riverbanks. We will wrap up the day with a delicious dinner at the lodge followed by a restful evening.
Day 4
Rainforest Hike to the Mystical Sandoval Lake
After breakfast, we will embark on a 3-kilometer hike through the dense rainforest to Sandoval Lake, one of the largest and most beautiful oxbow lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve, and a known habitat for piranhas. The interpretive trail will immerse us in a unique natural environment before we reach the shores of this stunning protected ecosystem.
Eco-Friendly Boat Ride and Wildlife Spotting
Upon arrival, we will board a paddle boat to explore the lake’s calm waters in an eco-friendly manner. During the cruise, we will spot a wide diversity of birds (such as the prehistoric hoatzin or shansho, cormorants, jacanas, rufescent tiger herons, and vultures), alongside howler monkeys, brown capuchins, tamarins, and sloths. With some luck, we may get to witness the resident family of endangered giant river otters, which can grow up to two meters long. Following the excursion, we will return to the lodge for a traditional local lunch.
Night Safari and Nocturnal Wildlife Immersion
At dusk, we will head out for a night walk along the lodge’s trail network. This excursion will offer a completely different perspective of the Amazon, allowing us to find and appreciate the amazing variety of insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal creatures that wake up in the dark. We will wrap up the day with a delicious dinner before a restful evening.
Day 5
Awakening to the Amazonian Dawn
We will begin our day very early, at 5:30 a.m., entering the rainforest just as nature starts to awaken. The morning chorus of birds and primates will accompany us along the path, creating a mystical and ideal atmosphere to start this day of exploration in the heart of the Amazon.
Adventure and Panoramic Views on the Canopy Walkway
We will take a short walk toward our impressive canopy walkway, suspended about 30 meters (100 feet) high above the forest floor. Walking along this structure will allow you to appreciate the jungle from a unique perspective and enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the majestic Madre de Dios River winding through the dense vegetation.
Birdwatching from the Treetop Platforms
From the platforms nestled in the treetops, we will pause to observe the forest canopy, the preferred realm of flying wildlife. With the help of binoculars, we will have the wonderful opportunity to spot colorful bird species in their natural environment, including toucans, macaws, tanagers, and orioles, making this an unforgettable experience.
Day 6
Final Breakfast at the Lodge
We will enjoy a delicious early breakfast in our dining room, savoring our final moments in this unique natural setting. Afterward, we will pack our belongings and complete the check-out process to say goodbye to the lodge staff.
River Cruise Back to Puerto Maldonado
We will board our motorized boat for the return journey to the city of Puerto Maldonado. During the river cruise, you will have one last opportunity to admire the majestic landscape of the Peruvian Amazon and take final photos of the scenery.
Final Transfer and End of Services
Upon arrival in the city, our team will provide a coordinated transfer to either the airport or the bus station, ensuring you arrive in plenty of time for your flight or ground transportation. This marks the end of our services, and we thank you for choosing to live this unforgettable adventure with us.
