Itinerary
Day 1
Reception & Welcome
Upon your arrival at the airport or bus station, our team will welcome you and transfer you to the Monte Amazonico Lodge main office for a key pre-tour briefing. Afterward, we will head to the port to board a motorized boat for a scenic one-hour journey downriver to our lodge. Upon arrival, a warm welcome meeting awaits you with a refreshing juice made from native fruits before settling into your room.
After a brief rest, we will embark on a two-hour guided hike through the dense tropical forest. An expert local guide will lead you along our trail system to discover towering, ancient trees over 500 years old. During the trek, we will have the opportunity to spot various wildlife species in their natural habitat, such as toucans, orioles, parrots, monkeys, snakes, and colorful butterflies. This will be your first immersive experience in the magic of the Peruvian Amazon, within the 278,000 protected hectares of the Tambopata National Reserve.
After enjoying a delicious regional lunch, we will cross the Madre de Dios River by boat to visit the famous “Monkey Island.” This natural sanctuary is home to a wide variety of primates, including the brown capuchin, squirrel monkey, saddle-back tamarin, and white capuchin. You will be able to observe them interacting freely in their environment before navigating back to the lodge.
At nightfall, we will set out on an exciting boat search for caimans along the banks of the Madre de Dios River (remember to bring your flashlight). With a bit of luck, we might also spot the capybara, the world’s largest rodent, which can weigh up to 60 kilograms and is a fascinating relative of the Peruvian guinea pig. We will conclude the day with a hearty dinner and a restful night at the lodge.
Day 2
We will begin the day with an early breakfast before taking a short boat ride to the main entrance of Sandoval Lake. After passing through the checkpoint, we will embark on a 3-kilometer (approximately 2-mile) hike that leads us to this stunning body of water—one of the largest and most biodiverse lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve, renowned as a natural habitat for piranhas and other fascinating species.
Upon arrival, we will board a paddle canoe to navigate the lake quietly. This peaceful approach allows us to spot a wide variety of birds and primates in their natural environment, including the exotic hoatzin, cormorants, jacanas, rufescent tiger herons, eagles, as well as howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, black capuchins, tamarins, and sloths. With a bit of luck, we might witness a family of giant river otters (an endangered species that can grow up to two meters long) or encounter the imposing black caiman, the area’s largest predator, stretching over 4 meters in length. Afterward, we will return to the lodge to enjoy a traditional regional lunch.
At nightfall, we will venture back into the rainforest for an exciting night walk. This excursion will unveil a completely different world, allowing us to appreciate the stunning diversity of insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal creatures that awaken in the dark. We will conclude the day with a hearty dinner and a restful night at the lodge.
Day 3
We will start the morning early for an unforgettable experience in the heart of the rainforest. We will head to our elevated trail and suspension bridge system, suspended about 30 meters (100 feet) high. This impressive canopy walkway allows us to contemplate the tropical rainforest from a completely different perspective, offering a privileged panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River. From the observation platforms, you will have the perfect opportunity to spot majestic bird species that inhabit the treetops, such as toucans and macaws. [1, 2, 3]
Following this incredible morning activity, we will head back to the lodge to enjoy a well-deserved breakfast. Afterward, we will pack our bags, board the boat back to the port, and take our final transfer to the city, bringing an unforgettable Amazonian adventure to a close.
