Itinerary

Day 1 – Cusco to Pilcopata Through the Cloud Forest

Your adventure begins early in the morning with hotel pickup in Cusco between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m. Traveling by comfortable private vehicle, you’ll first visit the ancient Chullpas of Ninamarca, impressive pre-Columbian funerary towers situated at approximately 3,750 meters (12,303 ft).

The journey continues through the picturesque colonial town of Paucartambo before climbing to Acjanaco Pass, the highest point of the route at 4,000 meters (13,123 ft). From there, you’ll descend into the spectacular cloud forest, where lush vegetation, orchids, heliconias, and giant ferns create a unique ecosystem.

During guided walks, you’ll have the opportunity to observe the Andean cock-of-the-rock performing its famous courtship display. Depending on wildlife activity, you may also encounter trogons, quetzals, several monkey species, and the elusive spectacled bear. By late afternoon, you’ll reach your comfortable lodge in Pilcopata, where private bathrooms and hot showers provide a relaxing end to the day.

After breakfast, continue by road for approximately 45 minutes to the river port of Atalaya. Along the drive, you’ll pass tropical fruit plantations, coca fields, and colorful orchids before boarding a motorized boat on the Alto Madre de Dios River.

As you navigate deeper into the Amazon, watch for herons, kingfishers, vultures, and many other bird species. The journey includes a stop at Boca Manu and the Limonal ranger station before continuing into the Reserved Zone.

The riverbanks offer excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, including turtles, white caimans, capybaras, and other rainforest animals. In the afternoon, arrive at your jungle lodge before visiting Cocha Otorongo and its 30-meter observation tower, where giant otters, birds, turtles, and other wildlife can often be seen. Overnight accommodations include comfortable beds with mosquito nets, along with showers and restroom facilities.

Today’s excursion takes you to Cocha Salvador, located about 30 minutes from Cocha Otorongo. Explore untouched primary rainforest on foot before boarding a quiet catamaran to glide across the lake.

This peaceful excursion provides excellent opportunities to observe giant otters, exotic birds such as the purple gallinule and agami heron, and numerous monkey species that inhabit the surrounding forest. Your guide will also introduce you to the fascinating ecology of the Amazon while walking along forest trails that reveal the secrets of this remarkable ecosystem.

Return to the lodge in the afternoon for another overnight stay. Guests may also participate in an optional guided night walk to experience the rainforest after dark.

Rise before sunrise to witness one of Manu’s most spectacular wildlife events at the macaw clay lick in the Salvadorcillo ravine. Here, colorful macaws, parrots, and parakeets gather to feed on mineral-rich clay, creating an unforgettable natural spectacle.

Afterward, begin the return journey along the Manu River toward Boca Manu while continuing to observe the abundant wildlife along the riverbanks. A stop at Cocha Brasco offers another opportunity to search for giant otters before arriving at the lodge for your final night in the rainforest.

After breakfast, continue by boat along the Alto Madre de Dios River, enjoying one last chance to observe the incredible birdlife and wildlife that thrive within Manu National Park.

Upon arriving in Atalaya, transfer to your private vehicle for the return drive to Cusco. Once again, you’ll pass through the beautiful cloud forest, appreciating its extraordinary landscapes and biodiversity before reaching Cusco in the evening, typically between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m., bringing your unforgettable Amazon adventure to a close.
